‘Something for Everyone’ at Upcoming Clare Museum Exhibition

The exhibition showcases a selection of small quilts made by the mid-west members of the Irish Patchwork Society over the last number of years.

Member of the Irish Patchwork Society for two decades, Tracy Watson has been working with textiles and sewing since she was a child. As a retired environmental scientist and keen conservationist gardener, the natural world features frequently in her work. Her love of colour, curved piecing and free motion quilting are indicative of her style. Tracy has recently embarked on a master’s degree in Creative Practice at Atlantic Technological University in Galway to further explore textiles as a medium for illustrating and communicating environmental issues.

‘Petals and Thorns’ is a small, much-loved piece, which hung in Tracy’s mother’s bedroom. The roses, inspired by Charles Rennie McIntosh and the Art Nouveau style, are appliqued on to a background of coloured graded curved piecing. The small red thorns within the beautiful garden of roses a reminder that life can hold surprises and should be treated with gentle loving care.

The Mid-West Branch of the Irish Patchwork Society are a group of approximately 50 enthusiastic patch workers and quiltmakers. There are quilters of all skill levels and abilities in the group, from new and novice quilters to professionals, covering every style from traditional to art quilts. They meet every month from September to June, on the third Saturday of the month. Their meetings take place at 10.30am in the Ballybrown Community Centre in Clarina, with all welcome to attend.
